There is no denying the slow crash of the CD is because of its size and easily breakable format but the CD isn’t the only one that crashed with music fans. Here’s a look into the most popular and the most forgotten medias.

The record is one that was a huge hit in the 1920s, straight into the late ‘70s. But its large size and awkwardness wasn’t always easy to transport and risked being broken or severely scratched. Adding to its unpractical nature, the record player had a needle that was very sensitive and was expensive to fix.

The record has had attempts at revival in recent years among rock and punk bands but has not gained the status that it had during its prime.

As a result of the record’s awkward medium, the music industry released the compact cassette in hopes of replacing the vinyl.

The cassette was first released in Europe in 1964 but gained its popularity with the release of the Sony Walkman in the 1980s. But like the record, the cassette had its downfalls, like its large size and limited space.

And that is where the CD came in.

Available since 1982, the compact disc has had the greatest success in the music industry to date. Since its birth, the medium itself hasn’t changed much and is still as breakable as it was in 1982.

A new musical future is underway which is slowly replacing the CD: the digital medium. MP3 players, like the IPOD, have been making big strides in the consumer realm and are being used by almost every music fan these days.

But ultimately, it is music industry who decides what format we listen to and it’s only a matter of time that even the IPOD, will play no more.

cd-audio-story-final

This is my audio story script as well as the audio file of the project. Since I’m trying to replicate a radio format, I signed off my piece “For City Edge, I’m Stephanie Dubois” as a fake radio program.

                             ——————————————————–

WITH ITS AWKWARD SIZE, SENSITIVITY AND ITS COST, THE COMPACT DISC HAS SPUN OUT OF TUNES AND IS LOOKING AT EXTINCTION.

WITH SALES DROPPING TO OVER 20% THIS YEAR, THE FUTURE OF THE COMPACT DISC IS BECOMING HAZY AND HAS MANY FANS AWAITING ITS FINAL SPIN.

CONCORDIA’S CJLO PROGRAM AND HIP HOP DIRECTOR BRIAN JOSEPH SAYS THAT THE CD IS OUT OF DATE IN TODAY’S SOCIETY AND IS MORE OF A NUISANCE THAN A NECESSITY.

ONLINE PIRACY IS PRIMARILY TO BLAME FOR THE DECLINE OF THE CD. USERS CAN FIND THEIR FAVORITE SONG OR ALBUM ONLINE FOR FREE AND WITH JUST A CLICK OF A BUTTON, IT’S ON THEIR COMPUTER.

RECORD LABELS AND ARTIST ARE ALSO FEELING THE DIGITAL PAIN AND ARE FORCED TO PROMOTE THEIR MUSIC TO LISTENERS IN DIFFERENT WAYS.

THE LARGEST SOCIAL NETWORKING SITE MYSPACE LAUNCHED A MUSIC PAGE IN SEPTEMBER IN HOPES OF BECOMING THE ONE-STOP WEBSITE FOR MUSIC FANS. PEOPLE STREAMED MUSIC OVER 1 BILLION TIMES IN THE FRIST OPENING THREE DAYS.

(Sound on Tape) CDs cases

STORING CDS IS ALSO AN ISSUE FOR MUSIC JUNKIES.THE PLASTIC CASE THE DISC COMES IN IS OFTEN LARGE AND AWKWARD TO KEEP. MANY MUSIC FANS HAVE SLOWLY BEGUN TO TRANSFER THEIR MUSIC ONTO COMPUTERS.

CRITICS ARGUE THAT THE USEFULNESS OF THE CD IS OUWEIGHTED BY THE HASSLE OF THE MEDIA AND ITS END WILL COME SOON.
